Sony, during its Corporate Strategy Meeting, first referred to the performance of the PlayStation 5 versus that of the PlayStation 4, going so far as to indicate that the new generation console is approximately 100 times faster than the PlayStation 4.
At the hardware level, the 8 cores and 16 Zen2 @ 7nm processing threads of the PlayStation 5 @ 3.50 GHz, and RDNA2 graphics with 2304 Stream Processors @ 2.23 GHz, will reach a performance ceiling of 10.3 TFLOPs compared to 1.84 TFLOPs of the PlayStation 4 (4.2 TFLOPs of the PlayStation 4 Pro). Although under the paper it is close it is almost 10 times more powerful, Sony indicated that it will be 100 times more powerful thanks to how not, the SSD.
“To improve the feeling of immersion in games, we hope to improve not only the resolution, but also the speed of the games.
For example, through a custom-designed high-speed SSD, we plan to perform game data processing speeds that are approximately 100 times faster than those of the PlayStation 4.
Game load times should be much shorter, and players should be able to move through immense game worlds in almost an instant, “said Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida during the meeting.
Kenichiro also reviewed two other important aspects of the PlayStation 5 that he believes will greatly enhance the player’s immersion. The DualSense controller will include haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, creating the element of “sense.” A custom 3D audio processing unit will also be installed in the console, resulting in a 360-degree soundscape in front, behind, above and below the player for more immersion. According to Yoshida, the combination of speed, sense and sound of the PlayStation 5 will provide “gaming experiences that were previously impossible.”
