The first VR lenses with HDR seem out of Star Wars
The Consumer Electronic Show 2020 is still taking place and there the companies are presenting several interesting products. One of the ones that caught our attention in the last hours are the new Panasonic virtual reality lenses, which are the first with support for high dynamic range images, in addition to that they seem taken from Star Wars.
It is a prototype of virtual reality lenses that was tested by members of 4Gamer, a popular Japanese medium (via PCGamesN). In its report, the media notes that the HDR support makes them deliver a more immersive experience, in addition to the device stands out for its light weight.
That said, the reality is that Panasonic’s virtual reality lenses are far from perfect. Especially because it lacks internal processing, so don’t expect them to have any kind of follow-up beyond giving you the option to change the direction you’re looking at. This also means that you need to connect them to a computer in order to enjoy content on them. In addition, its design makes it easy for them to fall if you turn to look down and causes those who wear prescription lenses to have trouble putting them on.
As we mentioned before, one of the most striking points of these lenses is that they seem taken from Star Wars. The Panasonic product could well have been designed by Ralph McQuarrie since it reminds a lot of the lenses that Anakin Skywalker uses in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. In fact, we would not be surprised to see something similar in the second season of The Mandalorian.
