One million people have used their PC to fight COVID-19

The world is fighting COVID-19, and while it may be hard to believe, you can support it too. The first way is to stay home to flatten the curve and the other way is by donating power from your computer to researchers who need it. In fact, there are already more than a million people who have supported this project.

According to Greg Bowman, director of Folding @ Home, more than a million people have donated processing power to their personal computers for the project. This with the aim of creating a supercomputer that helps research that seeks to learn more about SARS-CoV-2 in order to find effective treatments and be able to develop a vaccine.

According to Bowman, among the million devices that make up his supercomputer are more than 356,000 Nvidia graphics cards; more than 79,000 AMD processors and more than 593,000 Intel-branded processors.

According to Nvidia figures, the community power that has participated in Folding @ Home has created a team with more than one exaFLOP of power. With this it is the most powerful supercomputer in the world. As a point of comparison, the world’s most powerful supercomputer is considered to be Summit, which has the power of 150 petaflops (or 0.15 exaflops).
